The One For Me

Photo taken by Emmy Stevens
Once in a while, I am asked
What my beloved would be like
If I ever find them.
If I ever manage to stumble
Into the perfect other,
I know exactly how they’ll be.
As kind as a cool breeze in humid air
As helpful as a bee in the spring.
We’d run through autumn fields
In the middle of the day
Tumble together into a sea of fallen leaves.
My love would help me
Bake through the long evenings,
Even if I forced them to sample every dish.
They’d tolerate my singing
And let me dance
To nothing in particular.
My love would be sweeter than a strawberry parfait
Their kisses would be lighter than peach fuzz,
But just as soft.
But my heart would be fine if they remained lost.
My love would be the cascade of ombre leaves
That settle around me after I jump into their pile.
My love would be the cocoa powder
Sprinkled on the froth of my seasonal coffee after a long morning.
I’d be fulfilled
Through the copious fruity pies
I’d have no chance of finishing.
I'm sure the neighbors would love them.
I’d still dance to that invisible toon in the middle of my house
Sing about small moments that made my day.
Either way,
I’d still be happy
with my love.
